Safety Training Programs

The objective of these procedures is the development of special lockout and tagout methods for customer’s machinery in accordance of the laws and CSA standards. These include written instructions as well as related photographs for the performance of lockout/ tagout. These procedures are sent to the customer in word format or on a CD for printing.

According to the occupational health and safety act, every part of the machinery, needs to be oiled, cleaned, repaired, adjusted or maintained to perform work, only when the motion that is dangerous for the worker has stopped working (flywheels, main motors, etc); and to prevent the movement of any part that can put the worker in danger (from gravity).

If the starting of a machine, device endangers the safety of worker, the control switches and control mechanisms are locked out and necessary precautions to prevent the starting are taken. The program is thus designed to avoid the sudden startup of machinery, and also to prevent release of the energy that is stored during maintenance and service of the machinery.  Locks or tags are the direct controls; the machinery is also isolated from various energy sources so as to prevent any injuries to workers.

Written program must be developed which generates the lockout/ tagout procedures that include the order of events that are to be followed in the lockout/ tagout procedures. The specific procedures for lockout procedures should be written in the program. It should also include the details of the completion of the necessary annual inspection. EHS also provides a model program.

Hardware lockout
Lockout devices that are standardized must be provided to the service and maintenance personnel. The devices should be able to stand the environment where they will be used. These cannot be for other purposes as personal lockers or locking the toolboxes.

Training
These requirements are met by general safety training programs which are offered by EHS and by departments that specialize in these procedures. There is variation in the training level. The maintenance and service personnel, who are required to carry out the lockout / tagout procedures, require a high level training than the machine operators, whose work is affected by the maintenance and servicing personnel.

Roles/ responsibilities:

Department:
Evaluate the equipment and machinery.
Development and maintenance of the lockout and tagout program to be written.
Maintain and develop the machine fit written procedures wherever they are necessary.
The procedures and programs should be evaluated annually.
The protective materials as well as hardware should be provided and maintained.
Special training to be provided to the personnel.

Supervisors:
It should be made sure that the workers get the effective training. They should use the lockout / tagout procedures while working. The devices are not used to purpose other than lockout/ tagout.

EHS:
Provision of general training. Assistance in assessment of equipment or machines. Assist departments in the regular audits of lockout/ tagout programs.

Individual:
Attending the training. Follow the necessary procedures for lockout/ tagout. Use the lockout devices for the purpose they are intended for.
